DAWN OF MIDI  • UNDER THE INFLUENCE

ancient rhythms for a modern climate

mark jacobson interviewed us for this bi-annual magazine based in london, uk

"there is individual technical virtuosity where one achieves complete command of an instrument.

this is not dawn of midi's genius. theirs is derived and mined from an obsessive, meticulous commitment to

ensemble through compulsive practice and continuous refinement. theirs honours

the past: a reimagining of ancient west and north african rhythms for a modern, western,

all-acoustic configuration of piano-bass-drums that, at moments, sounds like the

frenetic electronic clicks, snaps, & bass drops of an aphex twin cut."

new york, ny

innov gnawa performed a “chaabana”, which is a “lila" that takes place

during the month of chaaban, of the islamic calendar, which precedes

the fasting month of ramadan. for the gnawa, ramadan is so sacred

that only silence, solitude and contemplation are what could be in deference to it,

making a “chaabana” even more vigorous in its intensity

DJ MIX • CLASH MUSIC

an exploration of african influences

a mix I did for clash music • dawn of midi's north and west african influences

" 'dysnomia', in a certain way, is about deception. the idea is to create music that would feel right,

in a certain pulse, and make people dance, even if felt in a completely

different and wrong way. just like in many folk traditions of the world, only the members of that specific

community understand and feel the music correctly."

"as an outsider and discoverer of this new music, you would enjoy it at first, even without really understanding it,

but the more time spent listening to it, the closer you'll get to feeling the music the right way.

this mix, containing diverse styles of moroccan folk and ewe music from ghana and benin, is a journey illustrating this very concept of deception. enjoy!"

dawn of midi's amino belyamani

sam tygiel interviews amino belyamani for the liquid music series blog

sam: how did dawn of midi start? can you talk a little bit about your journey

as collaborators and how you arrived at the music that you

will be performing for the liquid music series?

amino: dawn of midi started out because of our failure to progress as tennis mates.

we decided to play completely improvised music in complete

darkness instead. we’re still not sure if abandoning tennis was the right choice.

deceptive rhythms & accidental influences

sam segal interviews amino belyamani for the walker art center blog

sam: i first came across your music in a 2010 radio session dawn of midi did on wfmu.

at that point, you guys were making this quiet, spacial improvised music

that seemed to be working more inside of the jazz idiom. can you describe

how you moved from that sound to the tight, composed, electronic-influenced music you are making now?

amino: as thrilling as it is to be immersed in the risk of each single moment,

when playing freely improvised music, it is almost impossible to reach those golden

musical moments at every concert. the majority of the music we love listening

to is structured pretty heavily, if not entirely composed. if one wants to guarantee

that kind of listening pleasure, for the audience as well as for the performers,

then everything needs to be worked out beforehand.

interview on pri's the world

Celebrating the music of Maqam, from Spain to Western China • by Bruce Wallace

European and Arabic traditions combined again in the piano of Amino Belyamani,

whose group SSAHHA closed Maqam Fest. After studying western classical and jazz music,

Belyamani started digging into the music–and maqam–of his native Morocco.

In SSAHHA, he plays a piano that’s been re-tuned to accommodate different maqam.

He says the retuning opened up new vistas in his playing...
